What We Are Discovering In...
Pre-Kindergarten
Third Quarter
Current Labs:
For Easter, the pre-K students pipetted water onto jelly beans, producing a candy-colored coffee filter . Wow, chromatography in pre-K!! |
Previous Labs: The students used magnets again to move circus dogs around the circus tent. Then, keeping with the circus theme, they learned how to lower the center of gravity to balance clowns on their fingertips.
As we move into the third quarter of the year, the pre-K students continue to learn about new "tools in the laboratory." We brainstormed about how to get a metal paper clip out of a water-filled graduated cylinder without pouring out the water. Several ideas were discussed, but once the students realized that the paper clip was made out of metal, they knew the answer - a magnet!! |
Kindergarten
Third Quarter
Current Labs:
|
Previous Labs: The kindergarteners returned from Winter Break ready to learn about and play with magnets of all shapes and sizes.
They also welcomed in the March winds by making wind socks decorated with things that blow in the wind. They learned that wind is just moving air - it is invisible but it does have weight. The kindergarteners spent a couple of labs learning how to read a thermometer. They were asked to arrange a series of jars from warm to icy cold, based on temperature. They enjoyed watching the "red line" move up and down! And, with the nasty flu hanging around, the students also learned about spreading germs. Using glitter as easy-to-see germs, we discussed how the simple act of shaking hands or giving a high 5 could spread the little critters! So, then we applied our nurse's favorite saying - "WASH YOUR HANDS!" We sang the Happy Birthday song as we washed to ensure a nice long scrubbing away of germs. |
