What We Are Discovering In...
Pre-Kindergarten
Second Quarter
Current Labs: The Pre-K students enjoyed working on a STEM project with their grandparents, building Christmas trees from pasta and Playdough!
Then they learned a bit about camouflage and how the snowshoe hare changes color to match the snow in winter and the woods in summer. |
Previous Labs: Pre-K students continue to make fun discoveries in Science Lab. They created some fall colors by mixing reds and yellows with pipets. Then they strung some Cheerios on pipe cleaners to hang a few "bird feeders" in the Learning Garden. Now they're enjoying Christmas science with peppermints!
The young scientists are now taking a close look at all things fall. We talked about how the kernels on a cob of Indian corn are all seeds. The kids enjoyed pulling off the kernels (which ended up all over the lab) and then planting them in some soil and in a tray of water. We'll see which one sprouts first! |
Kindergarten
Second Quarter
Current Labs: As the weather turns colder, we have started talking about the adaptations that animals have to keep warm. Penguins and polar bears have been fun to talk about. We tried to see how hard it is for a daddy penguin to keep an egg on its feet, and we used our sense of smell to find our own family of penguins. We also decorated an early form of Intuit glasses with slanted peepholes to block the bright sun.
Using double-bagged Crisco as blubber mitts, the students were able to feel the difference that blubber makes. It provides energy to the polar bear, but also helps keep it warm. |
Previous Labs: After using water cohesion to sail the Mayflower across their trays of water, the students then turned to decorating plastic cups to melt into Christmas ornaments. They will wrap up the year rescuing dinosaurs from the frozen tundra!
The students are welcoming in fall by designing their own leaves on goldenrod paper using baking soda! They have also enjoyed hammering the colorful pigment right out of the pretty leaves onto fabric. |
