What We Are Discovering In...
First Grade
Second Quarter
Current Labs: After Christmas Break, the first graders returned to work, looking at the layers of the Earth (the core, the mantle, and the crust). They created models of the earth from Playdough.
Then they conducted some experiments on rocks, observing the color, the texture, and whether or not the rock floated. |
Previous Labs: To celebrate Christmas, the first graders created some supersaturated solutions with Borax to make crystal ornaments and with salt to make paper Christmas tree ornaments.
First graders are exploring Earth and space. Keep an eye on the sky for some new constellations that are being discovered in Science Lab! |
Second Grade
Second Quarter
Current Labs: The second graders will spend the next few weeks studying Heat, Light, and Sound. Using sponge animal capsules, they determined that hot water causes more energy than cold water, allowing the sponges to emerge from their capsules sooner.
Next, we will discuss how hot air rises, then onto convection currents! |
Previous Labs: After some fun Alka Seltzer rockets, the students were introduced to a non-Newtonian fluid (cornstarch and water). This suspension has properties of both liquids and solids, which can result in some pretty messy explorations! The students will wrap the unit up with some sculpting in solid ice.
Second graders are looking at phases of matter. Using two-pan balances, they compared the weights of some solids; using graduated cylinders, they measured the volume of liquids; and using a gas-producing chemical reaction, they will soon rocket film canisters into the air! |
