What We Are Discovering In...
First Grade
Fourth Quarter
Current Labs: The first graders have been busy this quarter learning about the things a habitat provides - shelter, food, water, and space. They also learned that some animals, like monarchs, migrate from one habitat to another, while other animals, like squid, adapt to their habitats using camouflage.
And for fun, we played around with acids and bases and cabbage juice! What? Yes, the students learned that cabbage juice can be used to determine if something is a base (soap, baking soda) or an acid (vinegar, lemonade). It was exciting to see the cabbage juice change color! |
Previous Labs: The first graders will start the final quarter with a focus on seeds and plants. They are conducting an experiment to determine if seeds need sunlight to germinate.

Second Grade
Fourth Quarter
Current Labs: The second graders are working on a final weather unit. They have made mini tornadoes in bottles and clouds in jars. They also conducted an experiment testing sunscreen on solar beads. They know how important it is to be safe while enjoying the sun this summer!

Previous Labs: After learning about the small amount of fresh water on our planet, the students took a journey as a water drop. They moved from station to station (Plant, Ground Water, Animal, Ocean, Stream, Mountain, Cloud) depending on where they were directed to go. Some drops fell from a cloud onto a mountain, where they rolled downhill into a stream, where they were licked up by an animal! Lots of interesting journeys!
For Earth Week, the students learned about how important it is to keep our water clean. They conducted a group demo to illustrate how very little accessible fresh water there is and how very much salt water there is in our world. Then, they made a representation of the world's water using popcorn kernels! The second graders are beginning to learn about simple machines and how we use them in our everyday life. Using the lever concept to make marshmallow catapults was a hit (literally)! Some students built ziplines and cranes by using pulleys. |
