What We Are Discovering In...
Third Grade
Second Quarter
Current Labs: The human health study continues, with a focus on the skeletal system. The students created miniature "selfies" with the appropriate number of vertabrae in their backbones.
|
Previous Labs: Third graders are beginning to study the systems of the human body. One class has already learned about the nervous system, and tried to trick their brains by putting one hand in ice cold water and the other in pretty toasty water. We discussed how each hand felt after moving them both into lukewarm water.
As a fun Christmas STEM activity, the students created towering Christmas trees from Playdough and pasta, with amazing results! To prepare for potential participation in the Science Fair and to review the Scientific Method, third graders conducted an experiment comparing paper towel brands. The following week, they created mock science fair display boards, which can be used as a reference when they do the real thing! |
Fourth Grade
Second Quarter
Current Labs: Returning from Break, the 4th graders had some fun with Newton's Law. They have yanked tablecloths out from under plates, dropped hex nuts in small bottle openings, and created some very unique balloon-powered cars!
|
Previous Labs: The busy fourth graders are learning about geology now, beginning with the rock cycle. They have also conducted a cookie mining experiment to understand a bit about the importance of land reclamation by companies that mine the earth. Finally, they created some overnight fossils and erupted some fun volcanoes!
To prepare for potential participation in the Science Fair and to review the Scientific Method, fourth graders conducted an experiment to determine which Smartie color is the most common. The following week, they created mock science fair display boards, which can be used as a reference when they do the real thing! |
