What We Are Discovering In...
First Grade
First Quarter
The first graders wrapped up the semester by doing a real science experiment comparing the twirling ability of paper ghosts! They made their own hypotheses and then conducted an experiment three times to determine which ghost twirled the best. These young scientists are ready to participate in the school science fair!
We celebrated our accomplishments of the semester with Halloween flubber! |
Wow, the year has started with a BANG! We are banging on bowls in order to understand how sound travels through the air! We also learned that sound can travel through solids (using ear guitars) and liquids as well. Students made texture rubbings with paper and Playdough as we discussed the sense of touch and the feel of different textures. They also smelled different flavors of Koolaid and looked through rainbow glasses as we discussed the sense of smell and sight. The students are eager to learn and full of energy in the Science Lab!
The first graders conducted a couple of real science experiments using the Scientific Method (good preparation for the school Science Fair in January!). They made their own hypotheses based on what they knew about fresh and salt water and about silly putty and plastic eggs. I heard some great reasoning ideas! Now they are moving into learning about forces and energy. We had fun this week sending balloon rockets across the room! After playing with a homemade "zoom ball," lots of bats were flying around the Science Lab with the help of a little inertia! |
Second Grade
First Quarter
The second graders will begin the year concentrating on all types of animal groups. They will learn about the different beak adaptations of birds and observe the huge size of a bear paw. Over the next few weeks, we will discuss amphibians (and learn how to catch a fly with our tongues!), reptiles (with color-changing chameleons), insects and spiders. We will finish the unit with a discussion and activity about the food web, and with Halloween flubber!
