What We Are Discovering In...
Third Grade

Fourth Quarter
Current Labs: After working so hard on their rockets, the third graders were then challenged to design a parachute that would keep a Lego man from falling to earth too quickly. Once again, the creative minds of this grade came up with some great parachutes!
Then they soared again with the Blue Morpho butterflies. Using nail polish, they created some iridescent butterflies.

Previous Labs: The third graders are now learning, designing, and building their own rockets for launching real soon! They are hoping for clear weather on their lab days!
The launches were very successful! Just ask Bill, who had to retrieve a few from the roof!
Next, third graders look at space. One class already made small-scale solar systems on the pavement. Did you know it took 12 years for Voyager II, traveling at 50,000 mph, to reach Neptune? It is really out there!!
They are also learning a bit about the waxing and waning phases of the moon. They were very anxious to learn...maybe because Oreo cookies provided a good visual. After a fun moon phase quiz, there was a big eclipse as the moons were eaten!

Fourth Quarter
Current Labs: Lots of activity in the fourth grade science lab as they wrap up a very busy year. In addition to some more engineering design challenges, the kids also had fun making some Cartesian divers, dissecting owl pellets, and tossing tortillas with scuba fins (too funny)! They have done a great job working in pairs or groups to solve problems or prepare designs. There are definitely some strong candidates in this grade for Science Olympiad in the future!
Previous Labs: With the much anticipated beach trip right around the corner, the kids got "in the mood" by dissecting squid in the lab. Once they got over the slight smelliness, they really enjoyed finding the built-in pen and ink, which they were able to use to write their names.
Kinetic and potential energy, along with gravity, enabled the students to create some amazing rmarble roller coasters right in their classrooms. Although not every design worked, they persevered.
They also had fun using the "engine" of a toothbrush to make some colorful drawings. Be sure to ask a fourth grader how that worked! And then they even added lights!
Fourth graders start the fourth quarter with a look at force and motion and machines. They have worked with spring scales, gears, and - the favorite - marshmallow shooters! They have also attempted to create their own machines.
