What We Are Discovering In...
Third Grade
First Quarter
The third graders celebrated the end of the plant study with Halloween flubber fun!
|
Third graders have dug into Science Lab...literally. For their study on plants, they will be learning all about the plant life cycle and parts, from the roots up. They have already “painted” with a variety of soil types and will soon plant the seeds of fast-growing plants. They will learn to make observations and take measurements over the next few weeks to track the growth of their mustard plants.
The mustard plants continue to grow, and the third graders continue to learn about the plant parts, from roots to stems to stomata in the leaves, they are wonderful cultivators of plants and knowledge! Soon they will see seed pods develop on their plants, signaling the production of seeds - and the cycle is complete! |
Fourth Grade
First Quarter
The fourth graders have started off with a whirlwind in science. They are learning all about weather, starting off with a neat lab on the water cycle. Then, they discussed the different levels of salinity in the ocean and conducted an activity in lab to visualize that concept. Their study will continue with labs on air pressure, turbulence, and meteorological instruments. And, of course, their studies will build up to understanding the formation and tracking of hurricanes.
Learning about Hurricane Hunters inspired the young meteorologists to design their own gliders. Not sure that they'd work in hurricane weather, but they definitely flew under blue skies!
We wrapped up the semester with a hands-on look at the effect of hurricanes on beaches, in which we simulated big ocean waves causing major erosion problems on sandy beaches without headlands.
And, of course, there was the festive flubber day in honor of Halloween!
